Educational Needs

Sexual Medicine is an evolving field that requires the consistent review of diagnostic and treatment strategies. Moreover, sexual medicine clinicians need up-to-date reviews of topics that affect the care of their patients. Specifically, such clinicians need to be aware of:

  1. Current challenges and opportunities in sexual medicine education including new concepts in physician training, including virtual reality and surgical simulators
  2. Novel pathways and targets for the development of new, more effective treatments for sexual dysfunction
  3. Advances in the surgical management of post-prostatectomy incontinence and the complications associated with surgery
  4. Current understanding of the microbiome, management strategies for orgasm dysfunction and how to carry out a directed sexual history interview
  5. Controversies surrounding the medical and surgical management of Peyronie’s disease
  6. The new DSM-V classification of sexual dysfunction and the management of hyposexual desire disorder
  7. The effects of cancer on sexual health
  8. Recent and emerging concepts in the link between erectile dysfunction and other mens health issues, priapism management and vascular surgery for ED
  9. Advances in the understanding and management of ejaculatory function and dysfunction
  10. Controversies surrounding the management of hypogonadism in men with various health issues; including prostate cancer and the need to preserve fertility
  11. Advances in penile prosthetic surgery in men after radical pelvic surgery, with various penile deformities, and the outcomes of various prosthetic devices

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this meeting, participants should accomplish improving physician competence by being able to:

  1. Describe the need for Fellowship specialty certification in sexual medicine and surgical simulators in training
  2. Identify challenges and opportunities in sexual medicine education
  3. Describe novel pathways and new drugs in development for sexual dysfunction
  4. Describe the management of post-prostatectomy incontinence and management options for surgical complications
  5. Describe management strategies for ejaculatory disorders and orgasmic dysfunction and carry out a directed sexual history interview
  6. Explain the controversies in medical and surgical management of Peyronie’s disease
  7. List the current DSM-V classification of sexual dysfunction
  8. Recognize the effect cancer has on the sexual health of men and women
  9. Identify strategies used to manage the cancer survivor with sexual problems
  10. Identify the link between erectile dysfunction and men’s health issues including LUTS
  11. Describe the management of hypogonadism in men with a history of prostate cancer and those wishing to preserve fertility
  12. Identify strategies to optimize surgical outcomes in prosthetic surgery
