2010 Fall Scientific Meeting
November 11 – 14, 2010
Loews Miami Beach Hotel

Miami Beach, Florida

President’s Message

As President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America for 2010 – 2011, it gives me great pleasure to announce the 16th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting which will be held at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, November 11 – 14, 2010. The scientific program chairs, Gregory Broderick, MD and Rafael Carrion, MD have put together an excellent program, the highlights of which I wish to present to you in this brief introductory letter. Our local arrangements chair, Lawrence Hakim, MD, FACS, promises that a little fun can still be mixed with business in Miami: Welcome Reception Thursday, Taste of Miami Friday and All That Jazz Awards Banquet
Saturday.

The meeting will open with a luncheon on Thursday, November 11: Tradition and Change in the SMSNA. All active members are welcome. We will start with a brief history of the SMS, followed by a review of committees, review of available service opportunities and conclude with an open microphone forum. This will be a unique opportunity for newer members to express their interests serving and directing the SMS. Thursday’s scientific sessions (I & II) feature three plenary lectures followed by podium presentations in Basic Science. Alexander Parker, PhD, will speak on Clinical Registries in Sexual Medicine: Lessons Learned from Outcome Research in GU Oncology. Arthur Burnett, MD, will address Basic Science Methodologies in Sexual Medicine. Shalender Bhasin, MD, will address Cardiovascular Adverse Events and Testosterone Therapy. SMS is pleased to host a concurrent program on Thursday afternoon, designed specifically for non-physician providers, Practical
Management of Male Sexual Dysfunction for the NPP
. The SMS recognizes and wants to optimize the role played by non-physician providers in sexual medicine. Our faculty John Mulhall, MD, Allen Seftel, MD, FACS, Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad, MD, and Rafael Carrion, MD, have worked closely with skilled nurse practioners and physician assistants to create SMS’s first collaborative program.

Friday, November 12, will start with an industry-sponsored breakfast symposium. The Journal of Sexual Medicine has hosted a debate for several years. This year the JSM is pleased to sponsor three distinguished authors and surgeons who will address the History of Surgery in Men’s Sexual Health: Irwin Goldstein, MD, John Mulhall, MD and Hernan Carrion, MD. Session IV addresses phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor therapies with two plenary lectures. Wayne Hellstrom, MD, will discuss Counterfeit PDE5 inhibitors, and Edgardo Becher, MD, PhD, President Elect of the International Society of Sexual Medicine, will review Worldwide Availability of Approved PDE5 Inhibitors. Dr. Becher is an international leader and will assume presidency of the ISSM during the September meeting in Seoul, Korea. Session V features Ridwan Shabsigh, MD and Laurence Levine, MD, who will lecture on: Criteria for Defining Late Onset Hypogonadism and Androgen Therapeutic Options. Session VI entitled Expanding Boundaries features Ajay Nehra, MD, our immediate past-president who will deliver a preliminary report from the Princeton Guidelines III conference; Mohit Khera, MD will discuss the Obesity, Infertility and Altered Semen Parameters; Luca Incrocci, MD, PhD, will discuss sex and cancersurvivorship. Dr. Incrocci will co-chair a joint symposium sponsored by SMS and ISSM in June 2011: Cancer Survivorship and Sexual Health Symposium. Sessions VII and VIII are moderated poster sessions. The SMS and Society for Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons business meeting will follow. Friday night is SMSNA theme night sponsored in part by Slate Pharmaceuticals. The Taste of Miami will feature celebrity chefs: Andra Randazzo, Allen Susser and Jonathan Eismann.

I am very pleased that two highly distinguished surgeons Peter Scardino, MD and Vipul Patel, MD, have accepted our invitations (Session IX) and will address the membership on prostatectomy: Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy and Robotic Prostatectomy – Lessions Learned and Outcomes Seen. These state of the art lectures will be followed by a challenge to one of our own John P. Mulhall, MD. Dr. Mulhall will address: ED Treatment or Erectile Function Rehab: Which is Best Practice? Session X is devoted to female sexual health and features a mixture of surgery, psychology and the art of communication. Michael Goodman, MD, will review Female Genital Plastic Surgery; Raymond Rosen, PhD, will address The Association Between Women’s Sexual Satisfaction and Body Image; Sharon Parish, MD, will share through videos The Art and Science of the Sexual Health Interview. Session XI will feature two senior members of SMS and SUPS who will examine Surgical Site Infection Prevention in Penile Prosthetics, Culley Carson, III, MD and Craig Donatucci, MD.

On Sunday the Society for Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons will sponsor its annual Resident’s Surgical Symposium; selected residents have been nominated and peer reviewed for participation and travel stipends. The general sessions will continue with Session XIV: Contemporary Surgical Technques. This year video sessions on TransScorotal and InfraPubic Penile Implant Techniques and The Male Sling will be followed by expert discussants and members comments. Session XV will feature Laurence Levine, MD and Dean Knoll, MD who will update us on Best Techniques in Peyronie’s Surgery. The final session entitled Men’s Sexual Health Potpourri, features Alan Shindel, MD, Rany Shamoul, MD, Stanley Althof, PhD and Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad, MD. They will address: Medical Management of Peyronie’s Disease, Aphrodisiacs, Premature Ejaculation and Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Sexual Function.

SMS meetings always offer a chance to meet old friends, and to engage in controversial discussions. I look forward to greeting each member of the SMSNA, our invited speakers, and our resident trainees. I warmly welcome non-physician providers with an interest in sexual medicine and surgery. I hope everyone will consider bringing a colleague who has not previously attended the SMS, so that they too can appreciate the value of this society and our commitment to sexual medicine, research and education.

Meeting Registration is FREE for Urology
and Family Practice Residents/Fellows!
A limited number of travel stipends are being offered.
Interested attendees should have a letter of recommendation
from an SMSNA member emailed to info@smsna.org.

EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & OBJECTIVES

Needs Assessment
The field of sexual medicine is experiencing rapid and profound developments in all areas of male and female sexual dysfunctions. Great strides have recently been achieved in basic and clinical sciences, resulting in major advances in diagnosis, epidemiology, discovery, treatment, and prevention leading to improved outcomes for millions of affected individuals. The area of pharmacotherapy is undergoing revolutionary progress with the development and approval of new, effective and safe oral, topical and implantable drugs for erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and hormonal insufficiency in men and women. In addition, surgical therapy has experienced significant innovations in prostheses and surgical techniques and surgical site infection prevention. A broad diversity of healthcare providers is emerging with direct care for patients with sexual dysfunctions. The existing needs of physicians and non-physician providers can be met by exposure to evidence-based sexual medicine practices. Surgical outcomes can be optimized by proliferation of best practice techniques and office-based complimentary care by non-physician providers. Optimal sexual health care requires: (a) in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of male and female sexual dysfunctions, (b) an appreciation of the relationship in male patients to vascular health, (c) the understanding of the psychologic impact on the patient and partner, (d) addressing the sexual function needs unique to cancer survivors and (e) providing integrated delivery of care by physician and non-physician provider teams. SMS has explored through electronic and print based surveys the needs of our target audience: urologists, psychologists, internists, primary care physicians, basic scientists, nurse practioners, physician assistants and trainees.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to improve patient outcomes by being able to:

  1. Assess a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, risk factors and psychosocial impact of male and female sexual dysfunction.
  2. Use the basic evaluation and management strategies for male and female sexual dysfunction in clinical practice.
  3. Describe indications, techniques and complications of prosthetic surgery for male sexual dysfunction and combined procedures for incontinence and ED.
  4. Interpret clinical trial data and investigative techniques in the management of sexual dysfunction.
  5. Explain male hypogonadism and recognize clinical signs and symptoms of male hypogonadism, including special populations.
  6. Report tests and lab measurements of total T, free T, bioavailable T to affect clinical diagnosis and appropriate monitoring after initiation of treatment.
  7. Employ counseling techniques for patients on the potential beneficial as well as adverse effects of androgen supplementation.
  8. Recognize the relationships between cardiovascular health and erectile function.
  9. Illustrate the use of PDE5 inhibitors in men with sexual dysfunction.
  10. Explain the role of PDE5 inhibitor daily dosing in the management of erectile dysfunction.
  11. Identify the potential adverse events associated with counterfeit PDE5 inhibitors.
  12. Recognize the role of diet and dietary supplements in erectile function.
  13. Identify new developments and non-surgical technologies in the management of Peyronie’s Disease.
  14. Employ best practices in the management of post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction.
  15. Assess the relationship between ED and coronary artery disease and be familiar with risk stratification and cost effective evaluation.
  16. Employ evidence based assessment and management of Premature Ejaculation.
  17. Identify cardiovascular risks related to sexual function in the elderly and appropriately triage safe therapeutics.
  18. Identify and evaluate sexually transmitted diseases.
  19. Employ counseling techniques for heterosexual and homosexual patients with sexual dysfunctions.
  20. Employ contemporary behavioral strategies and pharmacotherapeutics strategies for patients seeking smoking cessation, weight loss and lipid management.
  21. Describe how to become a public health advocate for the cancer survivor with sexual dysfunctions.

Overview
While the target audience is diverse, our program is aimed at fulfilling the needs of urologists, primary care physicians, internists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, physician assistants, nurse practioners, residents, fellows, medical students and researchers interested in sexual medicine. This educational event will be publicized through direct mass mailing, the internet and advertisements in major medical journals. This meeting will present up-to-date information on erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, Peyronie’s Disease, hypogonadism and female sexual dysfunctions. The information will cover many of the related fields, such as anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis,
discovery, research, treatment and prevention. The participants are expected to acquire medical knowledge, surgical knowledge and communication skills for the evaluation and management of patients with the various sexual dysfunctions. This interactive meeting will include state-of-the-art lectures, symposia, interactive videos, basic and clinical science poster sessions and case-based management from the audience.

Evaluation of Quality of Activity
The educational quality of the meeting will be assessed with real time audience response pads in which each sessions and/or lecture/ interactive session will be evaluated for content, clinical utility and relevance to their practice. At the end of the program the tabulated results will be presented to the audience and awards to those speakers and sessions receiving the highest score will be recognized.
