Formerly known as: 2016 Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of SMSNA

Message of the Meeting Committee Chair

Welcome to the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) in sunny Scottsdale! This meeting promises to build upon our history of stimulating and informative scientific programs.

The 22nd Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of SMSNA has been designed to build on the strengths of prior meetings while simultaneously expanding our content to encompass the educational needs of our diverse membership. The days are long, and the schedule is full, but this is reflective of the nature of sexual medicine. It is our firm belief that this meeting will serve the needs of urologists, allied health practitioners, mental health experts, basic science and clinical researchers, trainees, and all other professionals interested in sexual health and wellness. We have enlisted the participation of top clinicians and researchers for the scientific program; we are confident that there will be something for everyone at this meeting.

The SMSNA continues to benefit from reciprocal relationships with organizations that share our commitment to sexual health. Our program will include special guest lectures by experts from the American Urological Association (AUA), the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) and the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM).

The program is loosely organized into tracks so that all attendees will feel engaged throughout the meeting; while these tracks are a guide we are well aware that our diverse membership has diverse interests. We hope and believe that there will be ample opportunity for “cross pollination” at this meeting.

As with all of our meetings, we have tried to change the format to reflect feedback and suggestions from previous years. This year will start with our well-regarded APN-PA Symposium, highlighting the essentials of sexual medicine practice for mid-level providers. After lunch, we will dive right into afternoon concurrent sessions on topics ranging from climax to Peyronies disease to hypogonadism, to male incontinence and reconstruction. We will also enjoy a session put on by the ESSM including select speakers talking about “my worst case ever.” This year, we will be including basic science talks into most of the general sessions, to highlight the translational element of our society.

Every morning, we will have Plenary sessions, with concurrent sessions in the afternoon. On Friday November 4th, the first session will focus on issues in Oncology, while the second will delve into basic science and translational aspects of female sexual dysfunction, pathways of inflammation, and penile transplant. Friday will also be the day of our popular resident didactics and cadaveric hands-on lab. In the afternoon, we will have concurrent sessions on a variety of topics including LUTS/BPH, priapism, and erectile dysfunction include lectures on biomarkers and the use of biologics in treatment of ED.

Saturday’s plenary sessions will contain a policy and clinic management session, including a lecture by Dr. Babayan, AUA president, regarding the AUA. The other session will focus on transgender surgery and medicine, including surgical, hormonal, and mental health aspects of transgender care. The afternoon sessions will again delve into a variety of topics, including a session devoted to basic science and another on mental health.

Sunday, we will end on practice management, including setting up practices, developing a practice, becoming a successful scientist, and how to write and review for journals. We will finish with awards for the best abstracts and take home summary messages. Residents and medical students alike have an opportunity to win prizes and cash awards with our essay contests and awards for best abstracts (anyone within 10 years of completing their training is eligible).

Our venue this year is the incredible Phoenician hotel. Be sure to review all of SMSNA’s available awards & grants. We look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale!
