SMSNA Statement on Elective Procedures

With the growing number of COVID-19 cases nationally and internationally, the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) recommends that all surgeons continue to monitor and follow the recommendations set forward by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) (https://www.facs.org/about-acs/covid-19/information-for-surgeons).

The American College of Surgeons has recommended that healthcare providers and hospitals cease elective procedures in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the United States Surgeon General, The American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation have supported the recommendations of the CDC recommending that facilities in areas with growing incidences of COVID-19 reduce non-urgent surgical, diagnostic, and interventional procedures.

In light of the serious and existential threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this statement serves to inform our members and the greater community of sexual medicine health care providers that SMSNA fully supports the above recommendations pertaining to elective procedures in order to protect their health and the health of those in the surrounding community.
