Desai Sethi Urology Institute; University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

- Program Director: Bruce Kava, MD MSCTI
Fellowship Overview:
The DSUI/University of Miami Fellowship in Men’s Health, Sexual and Reproductive Medicine, and Andrology provides a highly diverse training experience. The voluminous clinical exposure offered in this one-year postgraduate training program includes hands-on training in urologic prosthetics (penile implants and artificial urinary sphincters), Peyronie’s disease (plaque incision and grafting, plication procedures, and prosthetics), microscopic surgery (varicocelectomy, vasovasostomy, and vasoepididymostomy), office procedures (vasectomy, testosterone pellet implantation, intralesional Peyronie’s plaque injections, and penile Doppler ultrasonography), urethroplasty, and various minimally invasive BPH procedures (Aquablation, water vapor thermotherapy, Holmium laser enucleation, and TURP). There is also extensive in-office experience managing a wide range of disorders within the realm of men’s health, sexual and reproductive medicine, and andrology.
Research Focus:
The Men’s Health, Sexual and Reproductive Medicine, and Andrology Fellow will be encouraged to participate in a variety of projects within our research portfolio. The Fellow will receive mentorship in grant writing, the development and implementation of clinical research studies, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with our internationally recognized team of researchers at the Desai-Sethi Urology Institute.
Currently, we have several ongoing projects evaluating:
The safety of testosterone replacement therapy in prostate cancer patients on active surveillance
Development of a sexual medicine clinic for male cancer survivors
Efficacy of Optilume in the treatment of posterior urethral stenosis in patients with prior pelvic radiation
Preparation of a Men’s Health Report for the State of Florida
Outcomes research related to penile prosthesis procedures, including an ongoing database of approximately 1,000 patients under active follow-up
Optional Scientific/Educational Activities:
Mobile cadaver prosthetic training lab offered by American Medical Systems (AMS)
Advanced prosthetic training models using hydrogel, sponsored by Coloplast
Various on-site training models for learning intralesional injection therapy for Peyronie’s disease
Men’s Health Training Bootcamp: a two-day immersive experience currently offered at UM to learn office-based urology procedures related to men’s health (Testopel implantation, penile Doppler ultrasonography, intralesional Peyronie’s plaque injections)
