Fellowship Overview
The sexual medicine program at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School and MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the leading programs in the world in men’s health. This program was established in 2002 under the Division of Urology at the UT McGovern Medical School and the Department of Urology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The program director, Dr. Run Wang, is a Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Cecil M. Crigler, MD Chair in Urology, the Past President for the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) and the current President for SMSNA Foundation. Our sexual medicine program has international renowned reputation and we have provided opportunities for mini-clinical visiting fellowships for more than 60 urologists from different countries in the world to learn our surgical procedures for penile implantation and pelvic reconstructive surgeries in the past 19 years. The official Sexual Medicine Fellowship Program at the UT McGovern Medical School and MD Anderson Cancer Center was established in 2018. Three fellows have successfully completed the training and established their own practice focused on sexual medicine in academic and private settings. The fourth fellow is anticipating to finish his training in June 2021 and start the practice focused on sexual medicine and men’s health in a large group private practice. We see more than 2000 patients yearly with erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, ejaculation dysfunction, hypogonadism, benign prostate hyperplasia, male infertility and requests for transgender surgery. We perform more than 300 surgical procedures related to sexual medicine and men’s health issues every year. We have the patient volume, first class clinical and basic research environment and strong faculty support to train our fellows in sexual medicine in our highly recognized academic center.

Research Focus
The sexual medicine program also provides opportunities for basic research and clinical research. The research laboratory for sexual medicine was established in 2006 in the Division of Urology at the UT McGovern Medical School. We have completed many basic research projects related to erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment and published extensively in high privileged journals, such as European Urology, Journal of Urology, Journal of Sexual Medicine and Asian Journal of Andrology. Our basic research will continue to focus on post prostatectomy erectile dysfunction in animal models. We are studying microRNA expression and stem cell therapy in the cavernous nerve injury models and the mechanism of VED for penile rehabilitation. We are also running industry supported clinical trials and multiple self-funded clinical trials related to surgical treatment of erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease and BPH.
