What inspired you to work in sexual medicine?
When I was thinking about specialties as a third-year medical student, I remember someone saying “you never meet an unhappy urologist.” This really stuck with me when I was making the decision of what field to choose. At that time, I realized how many physicians seemed unhappy even as an attending and I realized that happiness is itself a great goal. Luckily, when I rotated on Urology, I really liked it. Later, I realized that the sex med people were even the happiest urologists.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
I enjoy the very personal conversations that we as sex med providers get to have with our patients. Patients share things with me that they tell very few if any people in their lives.
More specifically to SMSNA, all the people I have met throughout the years going to meeting and being involved in committees. This is a great community, and I get to see friends from around the country at these meetings. I didn’t anticipate that this community was part of attending life when I started and it has been a pleasant surprise
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I was a high school teacher for 2 years before going to medical school.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Have your papers tell a story.
What would your ideal vacation be?
Something involving mountains, hiking, experiencing a different culture.
