What inspired you to work in sexual medicine?

I always knew I wanted to be a psychologist, but I didn't have a clear idea of a specialty. I was interested in people, their relationships, and their stories. My first internship was in a community family counseling center. It quickly became apparent that no one at the center had any idea of how to work with those experiencing sexual complaints, and no one was really interested in discussing sex with patients. I saw a need to be filled and I volunteered to get specialty training and take on these cases. That was 40+ years ago and the rest is history!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?

Being a psychologist/sex therapist is a very privileged position. You are let into your patients' worlds in a way that few are given access. They trust you with their deepest, darkest, and most private thoughts, fears, and life experiences. This is an aspect of doing sex therapy of which I am consistently mindful. Being someone that patients can turn to and share their sexual concerns is humbling, gratifying, and exceptionally rewarding.

What is something most people don’t know about you? 

Being a psychologist/sex therapist was actually my second career choice. Much of my young life was spent wanting to be one of the Beatles. Unfortunately, neither John, Paul, George, or Ringo was interested! Seriously though, I have been a guitar player since 1964 and played professionally for many years. It is still one of my favorite leisure activities.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Listen and challenge even your most firmly believed assumptions. Everything is more complex and nuanced than you realize. There is no doubt in my mind that this has served me well, both personally and professionally.

What would your ideal vacation be?

I am a very fortunate man. Anywhere with my wife of 45 years is ideal!
