What inspired you to work in sexual medicine?
This developed all the way back to PA school. I questioned why we weren't learning about the clitoris and female pleasure, but were learning about erections and male low testosterone. Sexual health is far more than just how the genitals work and this inspired me to learn more about the sexual response cycle and the biopsychosocial model to understand what fueled an individual's sexual appetite. Plus, this is a taboo topic filled with shame and embarrassment. I really wanted to break down those barriers and help people optimize their pleasure.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
That appointment when you have been working with a patient for quite some time and they are grinning ear to ear with excitement to tell you the sexual successes! There is nothing more rewarding then giving a patient the tools and permission to explore their own sexuality and claim it, becoming their authentic sexual selves.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I am a sucker for a good love story! The Notebook is one of my favorite movies.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
A "no" means that you haven't found the right "yes" yet. So many people get discouraged and give up when someone tells them this won't work or they can't do that. When opening up my own business, I reached out to numbers of individuals for support and most couldn't commit because I didn't have business experience. But I kept going - I had to wait and be patient for the right "yes" to come along.
What would your ideal vacation be?
Relaxing by myself, sleeping in, watching movies, and eating good food (cooked by someone else). No particular location necessary. :)
